Description of the KTS120 Portafilter Machine

The KTS120 is especially made for the preparation of espresso coffee without electric power. Thanks to its unique pressure transformation system it meets the requirements put down by INEI (Italian National Espresso Institute).

Among others, three main parameters must be maintained during the brewing process:

  1. Water pressure approx. 9 bar (130 psi)
  2. Brewing temperature approx. 90 °C (194 °F)
  3. Brewing time approx. 25 seconds

As compared to ordinary coffee, Espresso has a higher concentration of suspended and dissolved solids, and has crema on top. That characteristic thick auburn layer of foam with a creamy consistency consists mainly of coffee bean oil and contains most of the flavors and aroma.

Conventional espresso machines can obtain a water pressure of 9 bar exclusively by using a manually operated or electrically powered pump.

Devices that employ the riser tube principle, known as ‘Espresso Pot’, ‘Coffee Pot, ‘Moka Pot’, etc., are well known. They use a water tank at the bottom that is heated externally. Water is pressed through the brewing chamber and the coffee is collected in an upper container. However, the pressure obtained by this technique is nowhere near the required 9 bar. Hence, it fails to reach the INEI specification and it must not be called ‘espresso’. According to the laws of thermodynamics a water temperature of 175 °C would be necessary and that is simply not practicable because of safety restraints.

The KTS120 brews the espresso largely according to the INEI specifications. The physical dimensions of the vital parts are designed for optimum results. No parameters need be adjusted and no skills are needed by the user.

The KTS120 is lightweight, portable and easy to use. All relevant machine parts are food compliant. All sealing elements resist high temperatures. Hence, the KTS120 can remain unattended on the heating source for at least 15 minutes without harm. The size of the bottom surface of the KTS120 fits on any universalized heating source. Thanks to an optimal heat transfer the water is heated up quickly.

The KTS120 brews your espresso almost noiseless. There is no hissing or bubbling sound and no row from any pump.

Cleaning of the KTS120 is simple and fast. The few metallic surfaces are rinsed with water and wiped with a cloth and can be stowed away in a cupboard if desired.

The KTS120 is used by people who like to enjoy a real good espresso even outside their home where no mains power is available. It can be used on any heat source that can bring a pan of water to the boil.

Water is filled through the opening where the capsule is also inserted. A slight rotation of a lever locks and seals the capsule holder. A coffee / espresso cup is placed on top of the KTS120 and you are ready to start the brewing process. Since the cup sits on the hot lid it is also pre-heated.

A ‘cold start’ takes about three minutes to produce the first espresso. For each additional espresso it takes about one minute after fresh water is refilled.

The tank holds a maximum of 120 ml, this is enough for a standard coffee (cappuccino, latte, coffee macchiato, etc.). For an espresso, however, should only be filled as much water in the tank, as is desired to beverage volume.

Operating the KTS120 coffee machine

Cold start

Place the portafilter, without the outlet pipe, on the hotplate with the filling opening facing up. Place the outlet pipe on the heat source as well. Wait until the parts can still be touched by hand. (corresponds to approx. 70 ° C)



Place the device on the heat source without the portafilter and wait until the indicator rod has come all the way up. Then fill up with water to just below the edge of the lid. This results in a beverage volume of approx. 52 ml (26 ml per cup). Wait until the water begins to boil gently, then remove the KTS120 from the heat source and wait until the indicator rod has dropped so far that the filter holder can be inserted. At the same time, the coffee can be ground and the portafilter filled.

The amount of coffee is ideally 16 grams. However, only enough should be poured into the brewing sieve that after tamping there is still enough space to insert the covering sieve. The covering sieve should not protrude beyond the edge of the brewing sieve, otherwise the portafilter cannot be inserted into the KTS120. The tamper pressure is in the usual range of approx. 10 to 15 kg.


Insert the portafilter

When inserting the portafilter into the KTS120, the handle bar must lie over the insertion line. (black line on the top of the lid). Turn the handle to the left until it stops. The handle bar is then just to the left of the indicator bar.



Place the device on the heating source. With electric hot plates, the heating temperature can usually be set to the maximum. When using on a gas stove, however, the flame size must be adjusted, otherwise the brewing time will be too short. In contrast to a conventional portafilter machine, where the pump pressure usually remains constant, the brewing pressure of the KTS120 increases with the brewing time. This is due to the special pressure translation system of this machine. If the energy supply is too great, the brewing pressure rises too quickly, which results in a too high extraction. All relevant sizes and values ​​can be set by the operator. On the one hand, these are the adjustable values, the parameters that are constant during the process; on the other hand, the variables that change during the process, the variables. With the KTS120 it is possible to brew a real espresso, ristretto, cappuccino, latte macchiato etc.


After brewing

As soon as no more coffee runs out or drips only slightly, the cups can be removed. The machine should then only remain on the heat source for a short time, a maximum of about one minute, otherwise the safety valve opens, which results in a slight loss of water in the pressure boiler. If the device is left unattended for 10 minutes or longer on the heat source, there is a risk that the rubber seals will be damaged and the machine will become unusable. In this case, the KTS120 can be sent to the nearest service center to replace the seals. (does not go under guarantee).


Cleaning the machine

Before you do not use the KTS120 for a longer time, you should rinse it briefly and dry it with a rag. The filler opening and the water tank for the drinking water should be cleaned daily, after use, with a little washing-up liquid using a suitable brush. The KTS120 must not be placed in the dishwasher, except for the portafilter, the brewing sieve and the covering sieve.


Descale the KTS120

The water hardness should be max. 8 °dH (corresponds to 14 °fH). It is sufficient if the water thanks and the location for the portafilter are occasionally descaled. The portafilter, the brewing sieve and the covering sieve can also be descaled. The sealing seal above the water tank does not have to be removed. Then all parts must be rinsed thoroughly.
